When I was running my travel agency in Chiang Mai, Koh Lanta was the island I steered people toward when they told me they wanted Krabi’s scenery without Krabi’s crowds. It never had the marketing budget of Phuket or the Instagram fame of Koh Phi Phi, and honestly, that is exactly why it has stayed good.
Why Koh Lanta and Not Somewhere Else
Koh Lanta is bigger and quieter than most people expect. The west coast is lined with long, easy beaches rather than the dramatic little coves you get elsewhere, which means fewer crowds spread over more space. It is also flatter and easier to get around by scooter than Phi Phi or the smaller islands, which matters more than people realize once they are actually there in the heat.
Being honest with you: if you want nightlife and a party scene, this is not your island, go to Koh Phangan instead. Koh Lanta is for people who want good beaches, good diving, and to actually relax.
Book Your Flights First
You will fly into either Krabi or Phuket and take a van or ferry from there, so lock in flight dates before anything else. I always tell people to check both airports since prices swing depending on the season.
Best Beaches on Koh Lanta
Klong Dao Beach
The most developed beach on the island, with the widest range of hotels and restaurants. Good for families and first-timers who want easy access to food and services without walking far. Best for: first-time visitors and families.
Long Beach (Phra Ae)
Longer and slightly quieter than Klong Dao, with a good mix of beach bars and quiet stretches. This is where I usually point couples and people who want a balance of convenience and calm. Best for: couples and a relaxed middle ground.
Kantiang Bay
Further south, smaller, and noticeably quieter. The road down to it is steep enough that day-trippers do not bother, which keeps it feeling more like a proper hideaway. Best for: travelers who want to escape the crowds entirely.
Where to Stay
Book near Klong Dao or Long Beach if it is your first visit, you will want the convenience. Save the quieter southern beaches for a return trip once you already know the island.
Diving and Snorkeling
This is genuinely one of the reasons I keep sending people here. Koh Lanta is the jumping-off point for Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, two of the best dive sites in Thailand, along with Koh Ha. Divers who have done both regularly tell me they preferred the diving here over Koh Tao, mostly because the sites are less crowded with boats.
Diving and Snorkeling Trips
Book ahead in high season, the good dive boats fill up a few days out, not the morning of.
When to Go
November through April is high season and the sea is calm, this is when you want to visit if snorkeling and diving matter to you. May through October is the wet season, and I will be blunt: some resorts and restaurants on the quieter beaches actually close down entirely during the worst of it. If you are set on visiting in low season, stick to Klong Dao or Long Beach where things stay open year-round.

Getting There
Most people arrive via Krabi, either by a direct minivan and ferry combination or a private transfer. It is roughly a two to three hour journey from Krabi town depending on ferry schedules. Book Your Transport in Advance
Do not wait until you land in Krabi to sort this out, seats on the direct van and ferry combo sell out fast in high season and you do not want to be stuck arranging it last minute.
What I Would Skip
Do not bother with a day trip here if you only have one day free during a Krabi stay, the ferry time alone eats most of it. Koh Lanta rewards a proper two to three night stay, not a rushed day visit. If a day trip is genuinely all you have time for, you are better off doing one of the closer island-hopping tours from Krabi instead.
Before You Go
