Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and its most popular tourist destination โ and after more than 30 years here, I’ll tell you it deserves the reputation, as long as you know what you’re getting into. Beyond the beaches, Phuket has an incredible range of things to do, from island-hopping to jungle adventures to some of the best food in the south. Here’s my honest rundown of what’s worth your time.

1. Phi Phi Islands Day Trip
The most popular day trip from Phuket, and for good reason. You’ll visit Maya Bay, snorkel in crystal-clear water, and explore the islands. The scenery is genuinely breathtaking โ one of those views that stays with you. It’s one of the best experiences in all of Thailand, and a must-see in my book.

2. James Bond Island Tour
Visit the iconic limestone rock made famous by the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun. The whole bay around it is stunning โ towering karst cliffs rising out of calm green water. It’s touristy, yes, but the views are the kind you have to see in person at least once.

3. Big Buddha Phuket
Phuket’s most important landmark โ a 45-meter white marble Buddha statue sitting high on a hill, with panoramic views over the whole island. The view alone is worth the trip up. It’s free to visit (a small donation is appreciated), and tours are available if you’d rather not arrange transport yourself. Another one of those must-see spots.

This is the side of Phuket most people miss. Explore the charming Sino-Portuguese architecture, colorful shophouses, and vibrant street art. The old buildings here are genuinely beautiful, and wandering the lanes with a coffee is one of my favorite quiet afternoons on the island.

Best Areas to Stay in Phuket
Where you stay shapes your whole trip, so here’s how I’d break it down after years of sending friends to Phuket.
Patong Beach
This is where the real action is โ nightlife, shopping, energy, all of it. But be warned: it’s also the most expensive and the busiest part of the island. Great for first-time visitors who want everything on their doorstep, less so if you’re after peace.

Kata & Karon Beach
Just south of Patong but a world calmer. Kata and Karon are quieter, with lovely beaches and a more relaxed pace โ my pick for families and couples who want the beach without the chaos.

Kamala Beach
The quietest and most upscale of the three. Kamala is where I’d send anyone looking for peace, quiet, and a touch of luxury โ calm, refined, and away from the crowds.

Getting Around Phuket
- Rent a scooter: The best and cheapest option (around $5โ8/day) โ but only if you’re a confident rider, as Phuket traffic can be hectic.
- Grab (taxi app): Safe, reliable, and no haggling. My go-to for most people.
- Songthaew (shared taxi): The cheapest way to get between main beaches, if you’re not in a hurry.
If you’re arriving from Bangkok or another part of Thailand, you can book your trains, buses, and ferries in advance instead of sorting it out on the day.
Best Time to Visit Phuket
November to April is the dry season โ perfect weather, calm seas, and the best time to visit. May to October is the monsoon season; I’d avoid it unless you don’t mind some rain and want cheaper prices and fewer crowds. The sea can also get rough then, so some boat tours pause.
Final Tips
- Book tours in advance during peak season โ the good ones fill up fast.
- Always negotiate prices at local markets. It’s expected, and part of the fun.
- Carry some cash โ many smaller places still don’t accept cards.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen at all beaches to help protect the coral.
Phuket gets a lot of attention, and yes, parts of it are busy and touristy. But look a little past Patong and you’ll find quiet beaches, beautiful old streets, incredible food, and some of the best day trips in Thailand. After 30 years, it still surprises me โ and I think it’ll surprise you too.
